Conference Updates

There will be a limited amount of light breakfast items (begnning 8am) and light lunch items (beginning 11am) available nearby the CSA welcome table (hotel lobby) each day.   Come by and grab a quick bite or drink (on us!).

The onlne version of the conference program is be posted HERE

This onlne version will show you the date and time of all the sessions, and will list out the presenters and all sessions, so you can plan your days.   The online draft wll not include the exact name of the room to which your session has been assigned.  You will need to arrive at the conference, pick up your name badge at the welcome table in the lobby, and that is where you will also find the final, hard copy of the program.  The final hard copy of the program will contain the room assignments of all sessions.

We need volunteers at the conference.    Please consider adding your name as a volunteer for a particular hour or two.  We especially need help with a/v setup each day at 8am, and teardown at 5pm.

Everyone that submitted a presentation to a session organizer by the extended deadline of Oct 23 has been accepted to present at the conference.   For those people in sessions that did not have at least 3 papers, we consolidated papers into combined or new sessions. This movement of presenters is visible in the online version of the program.

Everyone on the online version of the program as a presenter, discussant or session organizer should have paid their membership and registered by now.  If your name has been submitted by an organizer as a presenter or discussant, and you have not yet paid, please take of that right away.   Unpaid participants may be removed from the final version of the program.

The conference sessions will run between 9am and 5pm each day, with an hour off for lunch.  Sessions are 90 minutes each.  The session organizer/presider is responsible for monitoring the time for each presentation and for the overall session.  The organizer/presider’s job is to hookup a laptop to the projector (hdmi cable provded) and receive the presentations from the other presenters, so that only one laptop is connected to the projector during the session.  The organizer/presider’s job is also to communicate time available (and time left) for each presentation, before and during the session.  The last job of the presider is to guide the question and answer session after the presentations.

The keynote address is at 5pm on Friday in the Sierra Ballroom.

If you are a presenter and have not already, please connect with your session organizer to discuss the details of your session, such as how long you will present, how to send presentation matrials to the organizer for display, etc.

Session organizers, please contact your presenters and send them the link to this website, along with details about your session.

All session rooms will be equipped with a projector, screen, podium, and power cords.  Session organizers should plan on bringing their laptop to connect to our projectors via hdmi cable.  We do provide the hdmi cables.  If you have your own cable, please bring it as a backup.

If you need an adapter to connect to the hdmi cable, then you should provide that.   The registration table will have a few adapters (e.g., vga and a few others), but we can’t possibly cover all the various hookups beyond the standard hdmi one.

Presenters that seek to display a presentation during their session should send that to the session organizer before the start of the session.   Presenters should ask the organizer of their session about the best timing and method to send the presentation materials.  We have also created an online folder for all presentation materials to be shared openly.  You can access that here (link forthcoming).

Before entering the conference, please head directly to the hotel lobby to find the CSA registration/welcome table (avalable 8am-4pm).  That is where you will check in and we will provide you with the final program and your name badge.  Please wear your name badge at all times while attending the conference.

Any questions should be directed to President-elect Mike Chavez, csaprogramchair2023@gmail.com, while also CC’ing Executive Director Tim Kubal tkubal@csufresno.edu

GENERAL INFO
We will be returning to our traditional in-person format with a Thursday night council meeting,
sessions all day on Friday and Saturday, and a buffet dinner and keynote speaker on Friday night.  We are open to reviving other traditions, such as special
topics panels, author-meets-critic sessions, round-table discussions, presentation space for academic companies and book displays, etc.
These and other ideas can only come to fruition through the participation of our membership.

Keynote

Perhaps no scholar embodies the spirit of justice, activism, and critical pedagogy more than this year’s keynote speaker, Dr. Melina Abdullah. Dr. Abdullah is a mother, professor, and former chair of Pan African Studies at Cal State Los Angeles. As a womanist scholar-activist, her work both in and outside of the classroom uplifts the imperative of struggle for the liberation of oppressed people. In addition to authoring numerous scholarly articles and book chapters, she is a visionary leader, organizer, and one of the founders of the Black Lives Matter Grassroots movement. Her commitment to justice serves as a model for what authentic praxis can look like.

Bulletin

The CSA bulletin has been published. It contains information on the conference and columns from several of the CSA officers. You can read the revised document here.

Student Stipend

We have received a generous donation to cover student’s conference registration and membership at this year’s conference.  A student that is currently enrolled at a university or college, and successfully completes payment for the conference on the CSA website, and attends the conference, and completes the signup sheet to apply for the stipend, will be eligible to be reimbursed for their CSA registration and membership fees after the completion of the conference. There is a signup sheet for this stipend here, and the stipend will be given on a first come-first served basis to eligible applicants, based on the order of completing the signup sheet, until funds are depleted.
